Who We Are

Our team continually strives to be the best outdoor store in the Yellowstone area. When we are at work we view every customer as a friend, and try to treat everyone just that way. We love the outdoors in all its forms; hiking, running, climbing, skiing, and just hanging out. We like to have the occasional social beer by the campfire, and sometimes we like to go out and push ourselves hard through a trail race or a long day with a pack. Whether you are going outside for adventure, to hang with friends, or just for the amazing experience – we’re excited that you have come to see us first.

Proud Part of Downtown Cody, WY

Cody, Wyoming and the surrounding area is one of the most diverse and high-fun outdoor recreation spots in the US. Just out the back door, we have huge wilderness, challenging mountains, amazing rock climbing and bouldering, wild rivers and empty trails – and that’s just in the summer. Winter brings great small-area alpine skiing and snowboarding, easily-accessible snowshoeing, and nordic skiing in beautiful valleys.

Sunlight Sports is a proud member of Grassroots Outdoor Alliance. Grassroots Outdoor Alliance unites independent outdoor retailers as a strong voice to protect and promote the experience of outdoor enthusiasts across the United States. We enable access to best business practices for our retail members, to the best equipment and apparel brands for the public, and to outdoor recreation for all.

Locally Owned

Sunlight Sports is one of the oldest, family-owned, specialty outdoor retailers in the nation and has the reputation as the premier place to plan your trip into the Wyoming backcountry. The shop was founded in January 1971 by Bob Newsome. Over the next forty years, Bob and his wife Sandy built one of the premier outfitters in the Rocky Mountains. They sold the store to Sandy’s sister Melissa in 2010. Melissa currently still runs and manages Sunlight Sports, and also has launched a sports-specific store downtown called Sports HQ.

2% of Sales Donated to Non-Profits

Your support of our locally-owned, independent outdoor shop keeps between 15 and 20 people employed year-round, and helps us make sure that deserving non-profits in our county get the support they deserve. Every year, we donate at least 2% of our sales to local groups that work to get youth involved in the outdoors. Last year this was over 35,000.
