Sunlight Sports + Juniper Presents: 5 Backcountry Cocktails infused with the spirit of the outdoors

The outdoors offers one of the best settings to go recharge, relax, kick off your shoes, and cut loose. The wilderness also lends creative inspiration, and we reached out to downtown Cody’s Juniper Bar + Market + Bistro to come up with some creative cocktails inspired by the spirit of the outdoors.

Next time you head outside for a good time, try one (or all!) of these five Backcountry Cocktail recipes from Juniper. They’re sure to make your stay in the wilderness just a little more wild …

 1) Morning Cup of Joe

What’s in it: Starbucks VIA Instant Coffee + water + mini bottle of Baileys

Special Instructions:

If you want it creamy, add one teaspoon of powdered milk.

Ingredient Measurements:

  • 1.5 oz Baileys
  • 1 packet instant coffee
  • Water (amount coffee instructs)
  • Optional – powdered milk

“I have been addicted to bringing my French press, really good coffee and a Jet Boil when I go camping,” said Juniper Bar Manager Paige Hull. “Jet Boils make the hot water part super easy. I also like a little more cream in my coffee, so I like to add the powdered milk plus the Baileys. Coffee and Baileys, I mean, talk about a good start to a day outside!”

2) Mountain Lemonade

What’s in it: Instant lemonade + water + mini bottle of favorite Vodka + fresh mountain Raspberries

Special Instructions:

Shake or stir in favorite mug or water bottle

Ingredient Measurements:

  • 1.5 oz Vodka
  • 1 packet instant Crystal lemonade
  • Water (amount lemonade instructs)

“Raspberries are in season right now, so you can pick them while you’re hiking,” said Paige. “Then lemons are easy to carry in your daypack. This could be a great little daypack cocktail.”

3) Fruity Irishman

What’s in it:

Jameson + Domaine Canton (ginger liquer) + apple

Special Instructions:

Mix in and drink from a flask. Pack ingredients in and drink neat, or mixed with water. Garnish with apple slice.

Ingredient Measurements:

  • 2 oz Jameson
  • .75 oz Domaine Canton
  • Optional – water

“Jameson is such a big thing right now behind the bar, and it seems like the guys like their whiskey out in the mountains,” Paige said. “I like it too, and I just thought it would be fun to do a ginger and whiskey drink. But you’re not going to pack something carbonated, so ginger liqueur is a better option.”

4) Campin’ Marg

What’s in it: Tequila of choice + lime Gatorade/sports drink + fresh lime + ice

Special Instructions:

Use favorite Nalgene to combine ingredients.

Ingredient Measurements:

  • 4 oz Casa Noble Tequila (or tequila of choice)
  • 1 fresh lime, cut into slices
  • 1 lime sports drink (Gatorade or other)
  • scoopful of ice if you have it

“We always take Gatorade when we go camping, so I thought combining some really good tequila with a fresh lime and Gatorade would be perfect for when you need a little pick me up,” said Paige. “When you’re out camping, and you make those last-minute concoctions with whatever you happened to bring along, sometimes those are the best creations.”

5) Trail Punch

What’s in it: Gin or vodka of choice + pineapple juice + honey + red pepper flakes

Special Instructions:

Mix & drink in Nalgene. Shake until Pineapple juice is frothy. Imbibe!

Ingredient Measurements:

  • up to 4 oz Gin or Vodka
  • 10 oz can of Pineapple juice
  • 1 small packet of honey
  • 2 tsp red chili pepper flakes

“This is our take on a camping Harvey Wallbanger, and we’re really into the idea of the pineapple juice with it,” said Paige. “The red pepper flakes in drinks are really in right now … It’s so fun and bright to use as a garnish, and then you can also be doing your camp cooking with them, too.”

Bonus fun backcountry mixer idea: Freeze-dried berries + Crystal pink lemonade packet + water + vodka
