A little update and some beta about what happened at the store that led to our temporary closure…

First of all – Thank you! It’s been a tough few days, but the outpouring of support from our community has been truly remarkable, and we will never forget it. We wanted to give you a few more details, and answer the most common question that we have been getting – “What can I do to help?’ There’s more details about what happened below, but…

First of all, what people have done already is amazing. The calls, the help with meals, the encouragement, everything has been incredibly touching. It means a ton to our team, and our family, that so many people have been there for us. Cody, the outdoor community and our friends in the outdoor industry have reminded us why we are all doing this as a job. There is simply no better group of people to live and work with.

Going forward, here’s what you can do to help. Not to put too fine of a point on it – if you need outdoor gear or clothing, when we get reopened, come on in. We will do the best that we can to help you out. Also – come to our grand reopening party (whenever that might be. We’re thinking in the first week of October!) If there is something that you will need for Christmas, or a birthday, or anything else after about October 7th, let us know and we will get it for you. We’re going to make it, and we are going to make it when we are able to serve our customers. We just need the chance.

As for what happened. In a nutshell, one of our employees bumped a canister of bear spray off of a hook with an elbow. It fell about five feet and basically exploded. The bear spray shot every where, and got picked up by the HVAC system, which moved the aerosolized oil over most of the store. Because it’s an oil, we can’t just wipe it off, so the vast majority of our inventory is damaged. It’s virtually unbelievable how wide of an area 9 ounces of bear spray will cover.

Several of our employees got affected. No one was seriously hurt, but there was a lot of coughing, choking and runny eyes for a few days. We’re currently cleaning up the store wearing gloves and/or masks. Luckily, we have a commercial cleaning company that is working with us.

It’s going to take us at least another couple of weeks to reopen. We have to clean, reset and restock. It’s really important to us that it’s a good experience when you come in. But, on the upside, we will have a lot of new fall product the next time that you are in!

The other common question that we have been getting is about whether we have insurance that will cover this. We do have good insurance. Our local insurance agent is fantastic. I think that it would be fair to say that our insurance provider is still in the discovery process 🙂 We don’t know yet what coverage will look like.

In the meantime, thank you again for everything that everyone has done to support us. Keep the good vibes coming, and we will see you very soon!
